Professor Alvin Ing

Professor Alvin Ing is a Professor, Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University; and the Clinical Program Head of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Program at the University.

He has been involved in Interventional Pulmonology since 1993 when he helped establish endobronchial laser resection and stent deployment via rigid bronchoscopy at Concord Hospital. He was instrumental in forming one of the first and largest patient databases in this area and is one of the few physicians in NSW specialising in and accredited in these techniques. Since 2011, he has been instrumental in establishing Interventional Pulmonology as a Flagship Service of Macquarie University Hospital.

Professor Ing pioneered the use of endobronchial valves in patients with COPD and emphysema (ELVR), and performed the first bronchial thermoplasty procedure in NSW, treating patients with refractory asthma. He has been involved in several World First, First in Human Clinical Trials, including bronchial rheoplasty to treat chronic bronchitis, polymer sealant in the management of COPD, thermal liquid ablation in COPD, robotic bronchoscopy, and endobronchial therapy of lung cancer. He is currently the Principal Investigator for clinical trials and research with total grants of over 7 million dollars.

Professor Ing has successfully supervised PhD students to completion in the areas of chronic cough, swallowing disorders, COPD, interventional pulmonology, and lung cancer. He continues to supervise both PhD and MD students and is actively involved in the Macquarie Medical School. This includes the supervision of Interventional Pulmonology Fellows and their pathway to a MPhil in this area.

As the program head of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory program, he oversees the growth and development of the disciplines of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Renal Medicine at Macquarie University.

Professor Ing’s clinical focus is to ensure the safe development of new techniques to improve both the diagnosis and treatment of common respiratory disorders such as asthma, COPD and lung cancer. He encourages and promotes a collaborative multidisciplinary approach to this with patient outcomes a priority.
